Digging is important as it breaks up the soil, making it light enough for plants and flowers to grow in.
If roots cannot push their way through the soil easily, any plant will be stunted and find it difficult to thrive.
There are a variety of ways that you can break down the soil in your garden, some easier than others.
This is best done between October and December when the ground is dry and frost-free.
Single digging
Dig trenches in your garden and work your way down the trench with a spade, breaking up the ground as you go. You could also dig in Gro-Sure Farmyard Manure or compost as you go to improve the soil.
Double digging
Do the same as above, but do it twice to ensure a really light and crumbly texture. This is hard work, but the results will be worth it! You could also dig in Gro-Sure Farmyard Manure or compost as you go to improve the soil.
No-dig digging
An easier, approach, but still effective. Especially good for those with back problems.
Spread Gro-Sure Farmyard Manure or compost onto the top of the soil so it creates a thin layer. Then sit back and let the worms do the digging for you. Over time they will incorporate this into the soil, thus improving the overall quality.
