A true gardener’s favourite, Marigolds traditionally provide sunshine colour in shades of yellow, gold and orange.
For masses of flowers, try French Marigold ‘Naughty Marietta’, or for extra large blooms try Affrican Marigold ‘Moonstruck Orange.’
Sow marigold seeds from February to March in Surestart Seed & Cutting Compost.
Harden off throughout May and plant out once all risk of frost has passed.
Marigolds thrive best in full sun. Simply add compost, such as Multipurpose with added John Innes, to the planting holes.
To boost flowering feed with Nutri All Purpose Plant Food or Nutri Slow Release Plant Food and dead head regularly.
Protect from slug damage using Eraza Slug and Snail Killer.
Marigolds are also excellent for companion planting which is a traditional method of natural pest control where two varieties are planted together to act as a decoy for insect pests. To try this for yourself, the Natural Companions range includes ‘Tomato and Tagetes’ (Marigolds) which deter Whitefly.
